JWCF Partners with NAC to Host November 6 Rowing Festival
JWCF has recently partnered with the Newport Beach Aquatic Center (NAC) to host the 18th Annual Newport Autumn Rowing Festival (NARF) on November 6, 2005. NAC is the premier rowing facility in Southern California and is home to more than 2,000 rowers, outrigger canoe paddlers, kayakers, paddleboarders, K-1 paddlers and other human powered crafts. The NAC boathouse is located in the Upper Bay of Newport Harbor and houses over 1,000 boats.
The NARF is as much a time honored tradition for rowing in Southern California as it is an event chalked full of talent from around the country. Over 100 teams will compete in the exclusive one-day event, some coming from as far as Massachusetts. A portion of the proceeds from the race will directly benefit the John Wayne Cancer Foundation to support local programs for youths on preventative measures against skin cancer, and the benefits of regular medical check-ups.
Billy Whitford the Executive Director of NAC:
"We are all very excited for JWCF's involvement in the rowing festival, and it just feels like the right partnership. Our children ARE the future, and we all need to invest our time in them."
JWCF and the NAC will also roll out an "Ambassador" program in the Spring of 2006 for cancer education and advocacy to the local youth demographic. Together JWCF and NAC will educate a group of peer "Ambassadors" who will go out into the local community and speak to their peers on the benefits of wearing sunscreen, wearing a hat, long sleeve shirts, or lycra surf shirts when exposed to the sun for prolonged periods of time. Southern California is a highly outdoor activity centric area, and many children grow up playing various sports in the sun. The "Ambassador" program will allow youths to learn from their peers in a very non-authoritative manner which is hoped to create a more lasting impression.
JWCF Announces a Partnership with REAL Kiteboarding
The John Wayne Cancer Foundation is partnering with REAL Kiteboarding on a skin cancer prevention and awareness program. Through the sport of kiteboarding, the John Wayne Cancer Foundation will educate the sport's participants and spectators through grass roots promotions, athlete involvement and event organization. JWCF will team up with REAL to bring heightened awareness to the threat of skin cancer and help bring our nation's youth up to speed on knowledge and prevention.

The partnership between REAL and the John Wayne Cancer Foundation kicked off with the JWCF sponsorship of a 48 foot, 7 foot high A-Frame slider in the REAL Slider PARK. JWCF also gave out free sunscreen at the Fly To.Red Bull King of the Air event at the REAL Lesson Center in Cape Hatteras in July. Photos from the REAL Event.
Trip Forman, Co-Founder REAL Kiteboarding on the JWCF partnership: "We think this is a great partnership. When I was traveling in Australia in the mid-90's, they were already 10 years ahead of us in respect to educating their youth about skin cancer. If kids didn't show up to school wearing a wide brimmed hat, they got sent home. We are talking about 5 year olds going to kindergarten. No hat, no school. When you learn from that age, you get the picture early. It's not about staying out of the sun entirely, it's about taking the right precautions like sunscreen, a hat and a board shirt. That alone will make a huge difference. That's what we need to accomplish with this partnership"
About REAL Kiteboarding: REAL kiteboarding is North America's only 100% dedicated kiteboarding center. REAL is located in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, internationally recognized as the best place to kiteboard in the world. They operate three full service kite centers, two in Cape Hatteras and a third in Cozumel, Mexico.

JWCF Supports OHSU Montagna Symposium on the Biology of Skin
JWCF has awarded a grant to the 54th annual Montagna Symposium on the Biology of Skin. This year addresses a topic of great interest to cancer researchers at the John Wayne Cancer Institute, titled: "Tissue Remodeling and Repair: Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Challenges."
The Symposium will be held Thursday through Monday, October 13-17, 2005, at Salishan Lodge on the Oregon coast. More information at: www.montagnasymposium.org
The annual MONTAGNA SYMPOSIUM ON THE BIOLOGY OF SKIN was initiated at Brown University in 1950 by Dr. William Montagna. The symposia grew from the real need to communicate investigative work in cutaneous biology and to provide a link between basic scientists studying the skin in man and animals and the clinically trained scientists in investigative dermatology. Since then, over 5,000 scientists, physicians, and students from throughout the world have attended the symposia, which each year addresses a single major topic in cutaneous biology.
