John Wayne Cancer Institute Receives Million-Dollar Gift in Honor of John Wayne's Centennial
Donation to Benefit the Institute's Fellowship Program
SANTA MONICA, CA - April 20, 2007. In honor of their father John Wayne's 100th birthday, Patrick and Ethan Wayne announced a gift of $1,000,000 at the John Wayne Cancer Institute Auxiliary's annual Odyssey Ball, which took place on Saturday, April 14th. These funds, from the John Wayne Cancer Foundation (JWCF), will benefit the John Wayne Cancer Institute's internationally-known fellowship program. Patrick, Ethan, and the Wayne extended family presented a check to Lou Lazatin, CEO of the John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI) at Saint John's Health Center.
"We are so grateful to be able honor our dad in this way. He would have been so proud to see what the John Wayne Cancer Institute has accomplished over the years. We chose to support the fellowship program in honor of our dear friend and colleague Joyce Green, who was honored this evening for the huge contribution she has made in leading this institute to become what it is today," said Ethan Wayne.
The John Wayne Cancer Institute is one of the most comprehensive centers for advanced training in surgical oncology in the United States. The exceptional combination of disciplines and facilities provided by the JWCI Surgical Oncology Fellowship program, in addition to JWCI's community hospital setting at Saint John's Health Center, allows each Fellow to have a synergistic learning experience between the laboratory and the clinic.
The program is one of only 16 centers in the U.S. approved by the Society of Surgical Oncology. Over the past three decades, JWCI's surgeons and scientists have trained more than 100 surgical oncologists in clinical translational research.
"We are so appreciative of the Wayne family's dedication to further the mission of cancer research and education. To honor their father, the Wayne family founded the John Wayne Cancer Institute, which today is world-renowned in the field of cancer research and treatment," said Lou Lazatin.
Since 1981, the John Wayne name has been committed by the Wayne family to groundbreaking cancer research and education in memory of their father who died of cancer. The John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's Health Center has received worldwide acclaim for advances in melanoma (skin cancer), breast and colon cancer as well as immune therapy of cancer. Other areas of research include prostate and liver cancer. Their unique ability to rapidly turn scientific breakthroughs into innovative approaches to treatment and early detection provides immediate hope to cancer patients from around the globe.
