Since 1985, the John Wayne Cancer Foundation has been committed to groundbreaking cancer research and education at the John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI). The Institute has received worldwide acclaim for advances in melanoma (skin cancer), breast and colon cancer as well as immune therapy of cancer. Other areas of research include prostate and liver cancer. With its unique ability to rapidly turn scientific breakthroughs into innovative approaches to treatment and early detection, JWCI provides immediate hope to cancer patients from around the globe. Patients from over 40 foreign countries and 48 states in the US have come to JWCI for assistance in the management of difficult cancer problems.
What's New?
JWCI has gained an international reputation for researching and developing new approaches resulting in important breakthrough discoveries in the struggle to treat and cure cancer, including:
The Historic Melanoma Vaccine
JWCI is home to one of the country's largest melanoma centers and the largest cancer vaccine program in the world. The JWCI-pioneered melanoma vaccine has significantly improved survival for melanoma patients and is currently in the final stages of clinical trials for FDA approval.
The Sentinel Node Biopsy, A New Medical Standard
Pioneered by JWCI surgeons, this exciting and effective new technique is being used as an alternative to radical surgery and for improved diagnostic accuracy in patients with all forms of cancer. This technique allows for better staging with less invasive surgery.
The World Renowned Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program
As one of only 14 programs of its kind in the U.S., this program trains the next generation of cancer surgeons in both advanced surgical techniques and laboratory research for careers as faculty in medical schools and cancer centers.
The Joyce Eisenberg Keefer Breast Center
This JWCI center provides a model for breast centers across the nation. Named one of "America's 10 Best Breast Cancer Centers" by Self magazine, it offers women an invaluable resource for breast cancer awareness, detection, treatment and research.
The Ability to Conduct "Translational Research"
JWCI's size, structure and philosophy promote its ability to quickly turn scientific findings into new treatment options for patients. In turn, clinical findings fuel cutting-edge laboratory research.
An Emphasis on Early Detection
JWCI scientists have developed a sensitive blood test that can detect one tumor cell in 20 million blood cells--an accomplishment that holds great promise for detecting residual cancer cells so that treatment can be initiated at the earliest possible opportunity.
Regarding Each Patient as a Whole Person
JWCI's commitment to patients includes nutritional oncology counseling, psychosocial support, and one of the nation's first Positive Appearance Centers--a patient friendly boutique where specially-trained assistants can help cancer patients choose from a variety of wigs and hats, as well as bras, camisoles and prostheses.
